The proposed clients were an older couple, the woman working as a professor at the local university, while her spouse operated a bike shop within their home. Influential in the design of this live-work house are the limitations imposed by its narrow and steep site as well as its historical context within the town of Chapel Hill. The residence implements a linear form that has been stretched to the ends of the setback lines so as to create the most space. To accommodate the frequent traffic of bikers to the bike shop a paved path leads to the bike shop on the first level. Fellow neighbors and friends of the terrace couple enter along a ramp shaded by trees. The guests are then greeted in the outdoor garden space at the center of the house, which also serves as the juncture between public and private spaces.
